The Cobalt discus is solid blue in colour. This strain came into existence around 1970 – 1980 when it was bred by Dr. Eduard S. Focke, during the time when American breeders were attempting to create more colourful discus. The Cobalt or Kobalt Discus Fish is one of the original Blue Discus Fish. The Cobalt followed the Turquoise discus and was produced from the “solids.” It is a further developed form of the Brilliant or Blue Turquoise, produced by crossing the Heckel and Blue discus. The blue in the strain is a lot further developed, and there is significantly less red that’s so prominent in the Red Turquoise strain. The transverse bands are still visible, unlike in the Flechen Turquoise and Blue Diamond.
Origin: Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various rivers in the Guiana Shield in tropical South America.
Location: Found in natural tributaries of the Amazon, Orinoco & Guiana Shield River in South America
Diet: They are omnivores, will readily accept most Tropical Flakes, Flakes, Spirulina flakes, Tropical Granules, Algae Rounds, Shrimp Pellets, frozen foods, GHM & BHM’s.
Adult Size: 6-10″
Recommended Tank Size: 130 liters+
Compatibility: Many aquarists don’t realize that angelfish grow quite large and have a bit of a temper. They are too aggressive for smaller tropical fish and too passive for cichlids. Choosing the right tank mates for freshwater angelfish requires a balance.
Though it can be tricky, plenty of fish do well with angelfish. Among them include some tetras, plecos, rainbowfish, and rams.
