L397 Pleco (Alenquer Tiger Pleco) – Care Guide Description The L397 Pleco (Panaqolus sp. L397), commonly known as the Alenquer Tiger Pleco, is a highly sought-after dwarf pleco species native to Brazil. It is admired for its striking orange to reddish-orange body marked with bold black bands and intricate tiger-like striping. Unlike many large plecos, the L397 remains relatively small, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums and aquarists looking for a colorful, manageable pleco species. These fish are peaceful, hardy, and known for their affinity for driftwood. Water Parameters Temperature : 24–30°C (75–86°F) pH : 6.0–7.5 GH : 2–15 dGH Tank Size : Minimum 80–120 Litres (20–30 Gallons) Flow : Moderate Lighting : Low to Moderate Care & Maintenance Provide plenty of driftwood, which is essential for digestion and natural grazing behavior. Include caves, rock crevices, and shaded hiding spots. Use strong filtration and maintain excellent water quality. Perform weekly water changes of 25–40%. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is preferred. Avoid introducing them into immature aquariums. Diet L397 Plecos are primarily herbivorous wood-grazers and should receive: Driftwood (mandatory) High-quality algae wafers Spirulina pellets Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and pumpkin Occasional protein-rich foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp in moderation A diet too high in protein may lead to digestive issues. Behaviour & Temperament Peaceful and shy. Primarily nocturnal but may become active during the day when comfortable. Males can be territorial toward other male plecos, especially around caves. Rarely bother tank mates and generally spend most of their time grazing surfaces and wood. Suitable Tank Mates Tetras Rasboras Rainbowfish Pencilfish Hatchetfish Dwarf Cichlids Angelfish Peaceful Gouramis Corydoras (in spacious aquariums) Tank Mates to Avoid Aggressive Cichlids Large predatory fish Highly territorial bottom-dwelling plecos Fish that may compete aggressively for caves and hiding places Adult Size Average Size: 9–12 cm (3.5–5 inches) Lifespan: 8–10+ years with proper care Pro Tips ✅ Always provide multiple pieces of natural driftwood. ✅ One cave per pleco is recommended to reduce territorial disputes. ✅ Feed vegetable-based foods after lights-out when the fish are most active. ✅ Maintain stable water parameters and high oxygen levels for best coloration. ✅ Tank-bred specimens typically adapt more readily to aquarium life than wild-caught fish.
