Gazing up at the nighttime sky, I am instantly transported back to a time where our ancestors used the stars as fuel for endless creative stories. Epic battles of good versus evil were waged across the centuries with only a blanket of bright lights as the canvas. As technology improved, we began to understand that some of these illuminated dots were planets, and our collective fascination only deepened. With a muted colour palette but a commanding presence in the tank, the Red Ghost Discus reminds me of Jupiter. Countless hours of my youth were spent looking through a child’s telescope for a mere glimpse of Jupiter’s stunning beauty, and even seeing it as a fuzzy speck was enough to send my imagination into overdrive. I dreamed of mystical lands and the creatures that inhabited them, totally enthralled by what might lay beyond the boundaries of our knowledge. Things have certainly changed since that time. Responsibilities of adulthood have taken over, providing less time to simply dream. As I watch the Red Ghost Discus swim, however, a bit of that childhood wonder returns to me, and I can’t help but smile.

Origin: Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various rivers in the Guiana Shield in tropical South America.
Location: Found in natural tributaries of the Amazon, Orinoco & Guiana Shield River in South America
Diet: They are omnivores, will readily accept most Tropical Flakes, Flakes, Spirulina flakes, Tropical Granules, Algae Rounds, Shrimp Pellets, frozen foods, GHM & BHM’s.
Adult Size: 6-10″
Recommended Tank Size: 130 liters+
Compatibility: Many aquarists don’t realize that angelfish grow quite large and have a bit of a temper. They are too aggressive for smaller tropical fish and too passive for cichlids. Choosing the right tank mates for freshwater angelfish requires a balance.

Though it can be tricky, plenty of fish do well with angelfish. Among them include some tetras, plecos, rainbowfish, and rams.
